Hospital Socorro de lo Alto depends upon donations of supplies, equipment, as well as financial support, to do its work. As there is no funding organization, the hospital must operate in a completely self-sustaining, financially independent manner. If you choose to donate financially or with equipment or supplies, 100% of your donation will go directly to the work of the hospital through Health Caring Services 501(c)3.

Whether it be monthly giving or a one time donation, any amount helps and all are tax deductible.

Supplies are needed for both clinical and surgical care of the patients. Because the hospital has the ability to re-sterilize supplies, we accept donations of opened but unused items such as drapes, OR gowns, surgical towels, blue pads, suction tubing, cautery pens, lap and smaller sponges and Coban bandages. Also needed are items such as sterile surgical gloves, unused bone cement, Foley catheters, suture, patient exam gowns… the list goes on and on! Donated supplies and equipment are either taken to the hospital by team members or sent to the staging area in Alabama where they are inventoried, boxed and packed for shipment to Honduras on a container boat. Containers are sent about 4X a year and shipping costs are $6000 for each container.

With the increased demand for more specialty services and the rising patient load, the clinic needs to be expanded and updated to meet these demands. The patient numbers often require the patients to wait for their turn to be seen, sometimes for hours and even outside. In the rainy season, this is very challenging. There is a pressing need for dental, ophthalmological and ENT (ears, nose and throat) examination and procedure rooms to be added, as well. With expansion of our Clinic examination rooms, much equipment is needed. If you have gently used exam room equipment you would like to donate such as exam tables, vital sign monitoring machines, X-ray boxes, stethoscopes, eye and otoscopes, please contact us to discuss our donation needs.

Rosa was the mother of 2 of the hospital’s Honduran interpreters, who immediately after giving birth to her fourth daughter, was diagnosed with cervical cancer by an American team gynecologist. If caught early enough, this treatable disease can be cured. However, less than 30% of women in Honduras are screened even once in their lifetime, causing it to be the #1 cause of cancer deaths in women in Honduras. In memory of Rosa, this mountain ministry team provides cervical screening, breast exams, basic wellness checks and women’s health education to the rural women who would have no access to medical care. If a woman needs further treatment, that would be facilitated.

Team members and hospital staff go into the mountains to provide dental and medical care to those who are unable to travel to the hospital in Sula. Financial support is needed to purchase the supplies and medications to treat parasitic infections and malnutrition, as well as vitamins for children, adults and pregnant women and supplies for oral hygiene. All are provided free of charge. An indigent fund also needs to be established for those patients who are found to need surgical care or hospitalization and have no ability to pay for the much needed treatment.

Patient safety is the primary goal of medical care. To provide a high level of care, reliable CO2 and cardiac monitors, anesthesia machines, portable digital x-ray and OR tables are vital. The hospital is committed to improving the potential of its employees and their children. Education is key to this process. Whether it’s training hospital medical personnel or supporting someone in pursuing a career through higher education, funding is necessary to provide tuition, books and transportation for those who apply and qualify.

Team members all stay in the on-campus team house which was built in 2009. They eat, sleep and spend their free time there, making it a heavily used building. Constant maintenance is required, as well as bed and linen renewal! At this time, due to usage and weather conditions, maintenance and painting of the interior and exterior are needed. With the growing teams, expanding the team house and adding more couples’ rooms are on the radar screen.

Construction projects to improve the hospital’s functioning are added to an ever growing “wish” list: 2 operating rooms, reworking the OR suction system and upgrading the electrical and air conditioning systems in the OR suite in order to prevent circuit overloads which leave surgeons operating by phone flashlight. The hospital is currently reworking its autoclave system to provide sterile supplies and instruments for surgeries.

Patient medical records stack up quickly. The goal is to upgrade the maintaining of the medical records.
